SELECTING JOB

In selecting the job to be analyzed and in establishing the order of analysis, top super-vision of a department should be guided by the following factors:

Frequency of accident: a job that has repeatedly produced accidents is a candidate for JHA. The greater the number of accident associated with the job the greater the number of accidents associated with the job greater its priority claim for a JHA, e.g. matchet cuts.

Production of disabling injuries: every job that has produced disabling injuries should be given in JHA. The injuries prove that preventive actions taken prior to their occurrence were not successful.

Severity potential: some jobs might have no history of accidents but may have the potential to ensure injury, e.g. chain-saw accident.

New jobs created by changes in equipment or in process obviously have no history of accident, but their accident potential may not be fully appreciated. A JHA of every new job should be made as soon as the job has been created. Analysis could be delayed until accidents or near misses occurred.
